Ed San Nic's Technology Picks.Effective Literacy Website #2- Prodigy

https://www.prodigygame.com/

This website combines learning and gameplay. Teachers have full access to the site and its capabilities. The subjects covered are Math and English. Students are given the opportunity to create their very own avatar for the game. They are also given the choice to name their avatar. By creating their avatars and giving them names they become invested in the game. It is a form of empowerment given to them.

Once they're finishes with their avatars. They are given once again a choice between a math or english gameplay. The teacher may want to control which they pick depending on the subject being targeted. I see this as being something given after the main lesson. This could be used as a review, independent work, or supplemental work. It is a nice change of pace from paper pencil resources.

After the students pick a subject they are given directions in the game on what is to be done. The first 5 minutes is familiarization with the controls, navigation, and basic overall gameplay. It has very similar vibe to that of Nintendo's Animal Crossing game. The students are given tasks to  complete throughout the game and need energy to complete them.

The game comes with preset skills that the teacher can chose from. This part is what I like about the website. It allows the teacher to choose what skills is to be reviewed during the game. The teacher also has the ability to dictate the timeline of these skills. The website if very user friendly. It is a win/win : students get to play a game and learn skills being taught in the classroom .If you're looking to add fun and excitement to your classroom Prodigy is a good start.

Ciera’s Farewell

Just like that fall intersession is over and spring semester is approaching. I had a great time reading through everyone’s literacy reviews....
