Vooks: Story Books Brought to Life!

ILA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #3: Vooks

Vooks (https://www.vooks.com/) is a spectacular literacy website, composed of an impressive library of children’s stories enlivened by attractive animations, read-aloud narrations, accompanying music and sound effects, and read-along texts. Vooks is the first ever streaming service to provide engaging, animated read-alouds for children. The literacy website aims to promote a love of reading at an early age and to promote the role of speaking and listening in K-5 literacy.

Vooks is an extremely useful literacy tool because the program is strongly based on educational research and best teaching practices. The research completed by Hart and Risley (1995) found that young children who are talked to and read to at a very young age develop larger vocabularies and comprehension skills compared to peers of the same age who were not exposed to the same experiences. This trend continues throughout the child’s life. Therefore, Vooks aims to provide children’s literature that incorporates sophisticated language to promote the growth of children’s speaking and listening skills. As an immense advantage, Vooks provides the read-along texts in their stories so children are exposed to the written word.

Furthermore, the research discovered that children with larger vocabulary skills develop larger comprehension skills. This is because students are able to place their focus on the ideas and information presented in the text rather than placing all their focus on decoding texts. As children build their vocabulary and comprehension skills, they become more independent readers.

In addition to promoting literacy skills, Vooks promotes social and emotional growth. The eBooks included in the website’s library include stories about characters dealing with difficult topics. Vooks exposes their readers to emotional awareness and coping strategies.

Overall, Vooks is an incredible literacy website that is grounded in educational research and best teaching practices. The program promotes literacy growth and social and emotional development. The attractive animations, read-aloud narrations, read-along texts, and accompanying sound effects offer a highly engaging and enjoyable reading experience for children.

Ciera’s Farewell

Just like that fall intersession is over and spring semester is approaching. I had a great time reading through everyone’s literacy reviews....
