As I write my last thoughts on
ED-484G, I am amazed at how quickly the course flew by, leaving behind
knowledge, growth, and fond memories. Exploring the intricacies of teaching
writing has been enlightening, and I am excited to share some reflections on
the main lessons from this experience.
A key support for my learning in
this course was delving into essential writing elements. I now understand the
writing benchmarks and the six traits of quality writing: Ideas, Organization,
Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, Conventions, and Presentation. This has
given me a clearer way to assess and guide my students' writing. Teaching
writing is challenging, especially with diverse student levels, but having
these traits in my grading rubrics makes me optimistic that my students can
improve their writing effectively.
The 'Getting to Know You'
activity/assignment stands out as a highlight, infusing excitement and
enjoyment into the learning process. The prospect of integrating this activity
into my teaching next semester is one I eagerly anticipate. Creating slides for
my personal timeline proved a valuable exercise, prompting me to reflect on my
own journey and how various memories have shaped the person I am today.
Inspired by this, I plan to have my students embark on a similar journey,
creating timelines that will serve as windows into their lives and fostering a
quick and meaningful connection within the class.
In the future, teaming up for a
writing prompt allows us to explore anchor samples across classes. I'm excited
about using the learned rubric to evaluate student writing and applying these
skills in a real-world setting.
In concluding my thoughts on this
course, I must express my genuine appreciation for the 'Getting to Know You'
activity and the personal timeline assignment, which added a personal touch to
the learning experience. The Zoom Café we had over the holidays will always
stay in my memory, representing the bond and connection that went beyond the
online platform.
Saying goodbye to ED-484G, I take
with me knowledge, teaching skills, and fond memories. This course was not just
a step in my education; it transformed how I teach. Cheers to growth,
connection, and the lasting impact of a heartfelt farewell.
