Ciera's Effective Literacy Review #2 Flocabulary

Flocabulary (https://www.flocabulary.com) is an educational website that uses hip-hop music to engage students in various subjects such as language arts, math, science, and social studies. The Flocabulary lesson sequence challenges students to think critically and creatively at every level. Flocabulary’s research-backed lessons are designed to build vocabulary and unlock comprehension, leading to improved test scores and outcomes. There is a monthly subscription that the district can purchase or teachers can purchase individually. However, Flocabulary does offer a 30-day free trial for those who are skeptical of their website.

When you log in to your Flocabulary account there are actual lessons that you can explore or ‘mixes’ you can explore. The lessons can be used in class from the initial video of the standard of your choice, then vocabulary cards, a vocabulary game, read and respond, a quiz and a lyric lab. These are all tabs to supplement what is being taught in the classroom. As for the mixes, these are videos with a host explaining the standard or skill, students will then continue to learn about that skill with a Flocabulary video.

Flocabulary videos explain a certain topic using catchy rhymes and beats. Students become engaged with these videos because of the beats, rhymes and visuals. One thing about Flocabulary, it has all standards from Math, Language arts, Science and social studies. Flocabulary also offers lessons on life skills, current events and just vocabulary.

Flocabulary’s design is neat because the teacher can introduce the lesson and explain what skill will be taught. The teacher can then proceed to Flocabulary, search for the skill and not only will the skill or standard be available, but there will be lesson plans and worksheets or activities that will be linked to that skill. Flocabulary is a resourceful website for teachers because of its standards-aligned curriculum.

Ciera’s Farewell

Just like that fall intersession is over and spring semester is approaching. I had a great time reading through everyone’s literacy reviews....
