The second site I chose to review is Oxford Owl, https://home.oxfordowl.co.uk/. I stumbled upon this site while looking for sites
similar to Get Epic (an e-book and audiobook library that is free for students
and teachers). The first thing I noticed about the site was the amount of
content it had available for free users. There were ELA, reading, and math
resources along with activities and a bookshop. The amount of content this site
had was comparable to several other sites put together.
Another pleasant
surprise was that even with all the other content they had, they still had a
respectable selection in their e-book library. I was pleased with the number of
filters they had in their library as well. There were filters for ages, types,
genres, series, and multiple filters for reading levels.
A great function that
Owl Oxford also had was its phonics tab. This area had a plethora of resources
which started with a guide and video to teaching and reviewing phonics for
parents. I also appreciated the Frequently Asked Questions section that would be
helpful to both parents and teachers. The amount of resources suggested and
given for phonics content alone was impressive. There were flashcards, phonics
support sites, and phonics activities.
In regard to
specifically using this site as a effective literacy website, I would
completely recommend Oxford Owl. Not only was I impressed with the amount of
content, I was also impressed with the quality and variety. The many
suggestions, resources, and filters make finding appropriate activities and
books for students simple.
Overall, Oxford Owl
boasts an impressive amount of content and resources for parents, teachers, and
students to use.
