Joanna's - Effective Literacy Website #1: Raz-Plus

Raz-Plus (https://www.raz-plus.com) is a website that offers its users a variety of literacy tools. The Raz-Plus site is where the teacher would log-in to access the various services that are provided once you have an account.

Starting with what would probably be used most often are the books that the teacher and students have access to. The books can be accessed by their genres, fiction, nonfiction, classics, or close read passages. The website also utilizes something similar to the Lexile levels to put books in different reading levels. The students are also given various assessments that help with placing them with a reading level that will provide suggested books that they could read. After choosing a book or being assigned a book, the reader has the option to read the book the traditional way or are given the option to listen to the book being read to them. This is great for those who might have some struggles with their literacy. There is also an option to have the reader take a quiz based on the information from the book they had just read, which is great for improving their comprehension skills. There are also ELL versions of many books, along with grammar resources, vocabulary packs, and various helpful tools for the ELL students in our classrooms.

There are also specific targeted skills that can be focused upon when using the website. Useful foundational materials can be accessed that can help with teaching the younger readers or students who are struggling with their literacy skills. The teacher is also able to print various materials that they can provide their students to use at home in the event the student is unable to access the website at home.

Grade-levels kinder to the fifth grade have access to a Literacy Curriculum Map that connects with certain standards or skills that they are working on in their classrooms. To help keep students interested in accessing the site, they are given a robot in which they can customize from points they earn from reading various books and completing quizzes. This is a great addition to the website because it keeps the students interested and entertained and motivated to continue reading books. Teachers are also able to print various awards or certificates for their class/students.

Overall, Raz-Plus offers quite a bit of literacy materials that can truly assist the teachers and their students, whether the students need to improve their literacy skills or to continue to foster a child’s interest in reading.
