ReadWorks

Read Works is a free literacy website I use in my 8th grade ELA classroom.  You can assign readings and it links with Google Classroom.  Below is a write-up based on the about page (https://about.readworks.org/):

Unlocking the Power of Reading for Every Student

Read Works is an award-winning EdTech nonprofit organization with a mission to revolutionize reading instruction and empower both educators and students. With over a decade of dedicated service, Read Works has become a cornerstone in the educational landscape, leaving an indelible mark on millions of educators and students alike.

As a nonprofit organization, Read Works operates to create high-quality reading instruction tools and supports that leave a lasting impact. The organization channels its energy into three essential pillars of reading comprehension, ensuring a holistic approach to improving overall reading outcomes:

  1. Building Background Knowledge: Read Works recognizes the importance of background knowledge in fostering effective reading. By providing resources that build a strong foundation of knowledge, Read Works sets the stage for a comprehensive learning experience.
  2. Growing Vocabularies: Vocabulary is the key to unlocking a world of possibilities. Read Works understands this and actively works towards expanding students' vocabularies, enabling them to navigate the complexities of language with confidence.
  3. Strengthening Strategic Reading: Reading is not just about words on a page; it's a strategic process. Read Works empowers students with the skills to read strategically, fostering a deep understanding of the material and honing critical thinking abilities.

At the heart of Read Works' success lies a commitment to the scientific study of reading.
