Start With A Book (www.startwithabook.org) 

was created in 2012 as an extension to Reading Rockets to prevent learning loss during the summer for grade school students. Start With A Book is a website that uses books as a foundation to explore, converse, and learn real-world adventures. Educators and parents will find booklists, hands-on activities, and links to multimedia resources that extend children's learning about the world. 

This website has 24 topics for reading, exploring, and learning about our world in fiction and non-fiction books, hands-on activities, writing ideas, kid-friendly websites, and apps for each topic. Some topic examples are Art & Artists, Heros & Super Heros, and Time & Travel, to name a few. Each topic owns it's fun-filled page of writing activities, stories, suggested books, and a list of other education websites related to the featured topic. The Art & Artist page is shown below.

The Tool Kit & Guide category has eight easy-to-follow thematic lessons with fun outdoor learning. The Tool Kits and Guide category has five-day activities and programs geared towards literacy and integrates content areas in science and social studies. Eight specific-topic web pages are full of adventures that start with a book and award the young learner with a printable certificate of participation. Other learning tabs above the page are Active Reading, Writing, Background Knowledge, and Summer Learning. Each page educates the adult with how-to guides, tips, and enjoyable activities necessary to promote active and fluent reading and writing to young learners. 

 

Think ahead! Sign up for Summer 2024 text messaging tips. Sign-ups begin at the end of May 2024. Parents or Educators will receive weekly learning tips to their registered mobile number. Topic tip examples are Mapmaker, Be A Reading Role Model, Vocabulary Bank, and Family Stories.
