Whooo's Reading: Hold Children Accountable for Their Reading

ILA Newsletter Project: Effective Literacy Website #5: Whooo’s Reading

Whooo’s Reading (https://www.whooosreading.org/) is a great literacy website created to engage elementary and middle school students in independent reading from their own devices. The literacy program aims to promote the growth of children’s reading comprehension skills. Whooo’s Reading motivates students to engage in higher-level thinking and to take accountability for their own reading.

Whooo’s Reading’s main focus is to promote reading accountability by engaging students in higher-level thinking assessments. First, students choose any book that interests them. Next, the website provides a quiz that includes three brief, higher-level thinking questions. The website provides a multitude of high quality alternatives to multiple choice assessments to hold reader’s accountable for their reading. Students receive personalized feedback from artificial intelligence supported by the National Science Foundation. Then, students are rewarded with virtual coins for their reading. Afterwards, based on their quiz results, students are given customizable suggestions for what to read next. As an added bonus, teachers receive automatic scores on their student’s assessments, making it efficient for teachers to monitor their student’s progress.

Whooo’s Reading is highly engaging for children as children are given the autonomy to choose what they’d like to read. Furthermore, Whooo’s Reading provides a great rewards system for their readers. When students read and write about their reading, they earn “Wisdom Coins” to spend on their avatars, which Whooo’s Reading terms, “Owlvatars.”

Whooo’s Reading is a great literacy program that holds students accountable for their reading by allowing them the autonomy to choose what they read and to engage in higher-level comprehension questions. The website is highly trusted by teachers and administration due to the program’s alignment to state standards. Additionally, the website promotes writing skills along with comprehension skills. Whooo’s Reading is a highly recommended reading tool to help foster reading responsibility and higher-level thinking in students!
