Effective Literacy Website #6: Scholastic Kids Press by Atisa Junio

Scholastic Kids Press (https://kpcnotebook.scholastic.com/) is unlike the other literacy websites that I’ve reviewed. Instead of a site where practices and assessments can be assigned, it is simply a Scholastic website with articles, free to browse for anyone. However, its appeal to teachers is that all the articles are written by students.

This makes Scholastic Kids Press a great place to find exemplary student-made examples to reference in the classroom. The articles can show students what they can be capable of with a little hard work; students are capable because others have done it before them. Some of the categories and topics covered in Scholastic Kids Press articles (seen in the header of the image above) are current events, the impact or influence of the Coronavirus on community projects, and civics. This can also be a helpful literacy tool for Social Studies classrooms or schools who are looking to start a school newspaper.

Scholastic Kids Press is an effective literacy website because it provides teachers with student-made examples of work. Scholastic Kids Press can also be used in the classroom to convey information to students about current events and other topics using student-friendly language. This can also help students explore and open themselves up to ideas outside of their immediate community, which could inspire them to bring back ideas/solutions from around the world and apply them to issues that may be troubling their communities.

Ciera’s Farewell

Just like that fall intersession is over and spring semester is approaching. I had a great time reading through everyone’s literacy reviews....
