It's an Adventure: Teach Your Monster to Read!

Teach Your Monster to Read is a non-profit, award-winning online literacy game that creates magical, fun filled learning games for kids. It is partnered with the Usborne Foundation. The Usborne Foundation was founded by Peter Usborn whose goal was to combine education, research, and technology to make information fun and interactive to learn.

This literacy website is geared towards the early foundational years and skills of reading and language. Navigating through the website, children are allowed to create their own monsters. They explore through magical and creative journeys that allow them to meet new characters along the way. The website contains vivid and colorful environments and characters that are appealing and pleasing to a child’s eye. Children will go through phonics schemes of blending and segmenting, letter-sound recognition, reading sentences and magical books, and more.

There are cool features for kids to practice what they learned in their adventures. The website has letter sounds and recognition flashcards that children can listen, review, and test them on the ones they know. There are mini games that allow you to select a category of phonics or phonemes and interact with animals, balloons, ponds, etc. Lastly, the practice section also has a game called, “Sighties”. This game has students listen to a certain sight word and have to find it within the scene happening within a certain time. All practice games help reinforce the skills acquired throughout the journeys that they take.

As educators, you will be able to see the students' results quickly and easily. There is a statistics section that graphs all the students who have played and not played daily or weekly. The site gives a child's current stage in the process of learning and the progress that they go through. It even gives the strengths and weaknesses of the student when they are interacting in the activities. Besides the learning aspect, there is also the reading for fun section. Children are also able to interact with the games not just to learn foundational skills but to explore and earn different kinds of books. This ILA website is a great website for those in the beginning stages of reading.

Ciera’s Farewell

Just like that fall intersession is over and spring semester is approaching. I had a great time reading through everyone’s literacy reviews....
