ILA Effective Website #6: Read To Me International

For my ILA Newsletter Weekly Project: Effective Literacy Website #6 Exploration, I will be exploring and reviewing Read To Me International (https://www.readtomeintl.org/). This website promotes read-aloud sessions to children. The creators believe that stakeholders and the community should unite to see the importance of reading to our youth. Several ways that they promote read-aloud are through coaching programs, correctional facilities, community sites, and schools. On Read to Me, there are read aloud tips that are shared with the public to guide the reader with dos and don'ts while reading.

A few reading techniques are also shared. There are events also posted on the website to allow the community to join, as well as ways to get involved with the move of reading to children. Read To Me is a great way to get parents, children, teachers and those in the community to come together to listen to stories. It reminded me of the Story Time Zoom sessions that we join in with Dr. Rivera. It is so neat to hear both children and adults read stories and simply enjoy the company of everyone.

It has been a challenging and rewarding semester! As students in this course, we have pushed ourselves to go further than we have before and to perform above and beyond with every post. As teachers, we expended much creative energy imagining all of the wonderful ways we can guide our students in the classroom and in the digital sphere. I hope we all continue to grow, learn, and teach together in the coming semesters!

Foundations A-Z is another website that falls under its parent company, Learning A-Z.  The website provides systematic and explicit foundational skills instruction which include phonological awareness, print concepts, fluency, phonics, and word recognition. Foundations A-Z provides lesson plans in both digital and printed format It is not a free website, but they do offer a free trial version which I am using for this review. 

The picture below shows what you see upon logging into your account. It offers a guided tour to help you familiarize yourself with its layout. You can explore lesson plans, professional development, and the resources of collection tabs to narrow down your searches. 

As you can see, the user can either pick the path that has been pre-planned or they can create their own path. 

The picture above shows what will pop-up if you click on lesson plans. This tab consists of 8 units and 4 modules per unit. This equates to 32 weeks of lesson plans. A teacher might want to use this feature because it has been back by a research. If not, they can always create their own path by using the various filters provided by the website. 

The below picture shows the outline of then lesson plans. It also provides you a scope and sequence according to your grade level. This is helpful because it allows you focus on the skills you need to ensure success in the classroom. 

Foundations A-Z allows the teacher to monitor their students' progress, have stories read to the children, and choose the right material for the job. This website has so much to offer. I recommend taking advantage of the free trial to fully explore this website. You will not be disappointed.

    Worksheets, games, lesson plans, activities, workbooks, exercises, songs, and stories, oh my! This is an educational site indeed! This site is also equipped with a Learning Library, the tab is seen at the top center-right side of the page.   Once in, you can search education resources in the search bar from various grades, Preschool to eighth grade, from everything math, themed word search, crossword puzzles to grammar, reading comprehension, and spelling out with vowels and consonants you will be satisfied to print or download the worksheet need to keep your child or students up to skill.  Common Core Standard is in place so that each interdisciplinary subject is in line with current mastery skills.  

    I like the “By Subject” area located at the far left of the screen at the teacher resources page. Reading & Writing, Reading (alone), Writing (alone), and Grammar will be equipped with folios and sheets of online resource worksheets for practice at home or in the classroom. Science and Social Studies are available for expository and informational purposes other than being used for skills in their field.

Since being forced into COVID-19 confinement in our homes, I have been a member since April 2020. Personally, I have many hard copy workbooks, worksheets, practice sheets, whichever you prefer to call reinforcement of skills taught as a follow-up to a lesson, but I needed a resource to present and upload online for my students during difficult moments in education as a teacher and student during 2020 and 2021. We had nothing in our hands to help students grow skills-wise. Thank goodness for Education.com. It was free and accessible to many common core skills-based lessons.  

Looking back at what I had accessed for Education.com, I see that a page of previously reviewed lessons included inferencing, vocabulary building, informational reading, writing in response to reading, and reading comprehension. Wow!  If you are a teacher, you should give this educational tool a try.

Although it is a free site, well mostly, its abundance of features for you and your students possesses great qualities you will unlock when you become a premium member.  I know, I know!   We, as teachers, cannot be forking out extra bucks for an online program. That was what I thought.  As I became accustomed to Education.com, I realized how awesome I could free up time and planning with its already built-in Common Core characteristics that my students and I would enjoy and already enjoy.  You should consider looking at the Premium plan.  And, with my pitch, I should get a cut on this website. Ha!  I mean it because Education.com is seriously a great educational tool.

Similar to IXL, with Premium, you can track your student's progress. Just add your students to Education. Com's system.

Lastly, if you have a little one like I do. This site has a cool preschool "Kids" corner.  It helps develop their verbal, listening, comprehension, reading, and vocabulary skills.  Plus, there is some technology skill development with a typing program.  For this, you would need to become a premium member.  Enjoy your Education.com!
